Work for repairing St John’s Church tower at Lewes is well on the way. The cost of the work is estimated at £400 (about £8,500 today), which leaves very little money in the church restoration fund.
Parishioners, in a few weeks time, will not only see a renewed tower, but also the Lamb, the one-time weather vane on top of the tower, regilded and once more gazing over the Sussex countryside.
The Rector, (the Rev. J E R Williams) told an “Express-Herald” reporter the tower was only one of many repairs needed at St John’s Church.
“I could very easily put £10,000 (£215,000 today) to this use alone,” he said.
The flagpole is to have its position changed from the tower to the fore-court of the church. Many replacements had to be made to the tower which included new brickwork.
