Applications for curate's post, 1959

Stuart Billington

Men are over 70, many of them former vicars, have applied for a curate’s job in Lewes.
This was stated by the Rector, The Rev. J E R Williams at the Annual Parochial Church Council meeting of St John’s Church, Lewes, at the Parish Hall on Tuesday.
After referring to the Curate’s house, No. 1 St John’s Hill, which he said would be known as St John’s Rectory, the Rector said he hoped that in the near future they would be able to obtain a curate, but they were not easy to find.
Most applicants were retired men over 70, and he felt they needed someone much younger.
He hoped the time would come when there were two rectors to look after the three churches. That would probably be after the time had come for him to move on, which he hoped would not occur for a long time.
