The Rector recalled that this was the 10th Annual Meeting over which he had presided in St John’s Parish.
He saw by the registers that during the 10 years he had been in the parish there had been 393 baptisms, 149 marriages and 292 funerals.
There had been 184 confirmation candidates, and 31,000 people had made their communions.
As regards sermons, he calculated that he had preached 980 times in St John’s Church, including addresses to the children.
In addition he had preached many times at other churches.
He had paid many hundreds of visits to the parishioners of which no record had been kept.
During the 10 years over £4,000 (about £240,000 today) had been collected at the church services at St John’s and in addition £1700 (£100,000) had been raised for improvements to the church.
There had also been a considerable sum provided by subscriptions for charitable objects.
