New flat roof to the Tower, 2015

Stuart Billington

In view of the fact that some of the original structural roof timbers had deteriorated, it was decided to replace them all with new treated timber.
Interestingly, the original carpenter’s marks were still visible on some of the joists. These marks were made by the carpenter to ensure that each timber, having been cut to fit a particular position in the structure, was fixed into the right place.

The old timber roof structure having been removed, new joists and timber decking were fixed:
followed by the new roof covering:
which should be good until at least 2100!
