A request had been received from Lewes Music Festival to hold a concert in St John’s Church in May 1971.
It was proposed that we accept, provided the Archdeacon had no objection to the temporary removal of the front pews, and the Festival would be responsible for the cost of removal and reinstatement.
(Extract from PCC Meeting, 7th July 1970)
Interestingly, as the use of St John’s Church for musical events increased in the early 2000’s – partly on account of its good seating capacity and fine acoustic – the removal of the front pews became a more permanent arrangement.
Now of course, with the removal of the pews altogether, we have complete flexibility!
