Crossbarry Ambush 1921

Jennifer Billington

The Crossbarry Ambush (click link for details) took place at a rural crossroads in County Cork and was one of the largest battles of the Irish War of Independence.  A large body of British troops attempted to encircle about 100 IRA men. Lt. Hotblack and 6 others were attacked using guerilla tactics to isolate small groups before the British troops had time to respond. Lt. Hotblack died later as a result of gunshot wounds. The Pulpit at St John’s was dedicated by his parents to his memory.
