Disappointing church income 1943

Stuart Billington

The Rector said that the St John’s Parish is not considered to be one of the plums of the diocese.
This is borne out by the fact that, although the population of the parish is now in the neighbourhood of about 4,000 – roughly a third of the population of the borough – the church income last year from all sources was only £379 8s 6d. (about £16,000 today), which works out at rather less than one halfpenny a week (about 9p a week today) from each parishioner.
