Mr Bourdillon, as a newcomer to the parish, remarked on the fact that there was no reference in the accounts to the pew rents and he asked for an explanation.
It was pointed out to him that the amount received in that way – £34 13s (about £2,000 today), appeared under the description of “Contributions to Church expenses”.
Mr Bourdillon expressed surprise at the fact that the pew rents were not described as such and asked for the reason but no one could explain why the alteration was made.
Mr Hughes said he believed that some years ago and objection was made to pew rents and that, as a compromise, it was decided to continuing to collect them and call them contributions to church expenses (laughter).
