Schools Learning project

Stuart Billington

This is a Heritage Lottery funded project which has enabled us to appoint Heritage Education Consultants to help local schools develop curriculum content focusing on the history and heritage of  churches and churchyards generally, whilst using St John sub Castro as a specific example to illustrate the curriculum content involved.

In developing their brief, our Consultants have held discussions with local Primary Schools to determine how the Heritage aspects of our church and churchyard could fit in with the school’s Key Stage curriculum requirements.

This will give rise to hands-on activities, and a range of creative approaches to learning about heritage. It will include visits to the church, supplemented by pre- and post-visit activities to help pupils get the most out of their visit. It will also include online learning resources linked to the curriculum topic, to enable young people to explore heritage through a website.

In addition, because of our strong links with Sussex Wildlife Trust as a result of their work in the churchyard, there is clearly scope for collaborative working between SWT and local schools in delivering learning opportunities for the Natural Heritage component of the curriculum.

The learning resources developed through this project will be freely available to local Primary School teachers for their use – please contact admin@stjohnsubcastro-history.org for more information.
