The Landport Estate 1939

Stuart Billington

The Rector was much concerned about the addition to the parish at the Landport housing estate. A few Sundays ago he accompanied the Bishop of Lewes (the Rt. Rev. Hugh Hordern) round that estate in the hope that something might be suggested as to meeting the increased needs of the parish in that respect, but from what the Bishop said there was not the slightest hope of anything being done with regard to additional help.
The parish of St John’s had a population of about 3000 and when the Landport estate was completed it would probably have a population of about 1000 for whom St Johns would have to provide.
Clerical help seemed out of the question, but he would like to appeal for a few more district visitors to help on the estate and so keep him in touch with the needs of the people living there.
That would be great help and he would appreciate offers to assist in this direction very much indeed.
