A growing parish in 1940

Stuart Billington

The Rector said that another important matter was the need of additional district visitors.
As they knew, St John’s Parish had grown considerably in the last year or two through the development of the Landport Estate, and this rendered additional district visitors a more urgent problem.
Miss Reece had very kindly undertaken the supervision of this work, and she would be only too pleased to welcome offers of help in the direction indicated.
It was not by any means slum visiting, which was not very attractive to most people. The houses were decent and the people were decent too, and if volunteers could be obtained to visit, say, a dozen houses, he believed they would soon grow to like the work and that they would find it very interesting.
