Churchyard 1936

Stuart Billington

The Rector said that 12 months ago those interested in St John’s were very much concerned with the expense of rebuilding a large portion of the churchyard wall that had collapsed, and also with the need of considerable repairs to the roof of the Church Room.
The total cost of these two items was £182 10s 11d (about £120,000 today), and they had been looking forward to the repayment of this sum being spread over five years. But he was glad to say that the sum had been raised with the exception of £20 10s 8d.
They were very grateful indeed to the many friends who had helped them so generously by subscriptions, large and small, in meeting this unexpected expenditure and removing what 12 months ago appeared to be a very heavy burden on the finances of the parish.
