Mr H J Hillman 1924

Stuart Billington

The Rector also wished to thank Mr Hillman very sincerely for his services as people’s churchwarden. It came as a bit of a shock to him that Mr Hillman wished to retire, but that gentleman had explained at length to him the reason for his resignation, and it was evident that Mr Hillman was a very hard worked man, and that it was as much as he could do to get through all the things he had undertaken. He never heard before he came to St John’s of such a churchwarden as Mr Hillman.

He sang in the choir, he was manager of two schools, a lay reader and he kept the church accounts, and did other things which he could not for the moment remember.

Possibly they had heard about such a churchwarden in a book, but he had never seen one like him in real life, and now he had seen one he was very sorry he could not continue in office any longer.
