Churchwardens

Churchwardens' staves

Two churchwardens are elected each year at the Annual Parish Meeting. Anyone who lives in the Parish is entitled to attend the meeting and vote. The job of the churchwardens is to give support to the Vicar, and to do what they can to ensure that Parish affairs run smoothly during the year.

Historically, one was appointed by the Rector and was known as the Rector's Warden (on the left) , and the other was elected by the congregation and known as the People's Warden (on the right).

Although this distinction is not now used, churchwardens still use the staves for escorting for example the Mayor at a Civic service, or the Bishop at a Confirmation service.
