Under the Grants for Places of Worship scheme, the Heritage Lottery Fund were willing to contribute towards new works which would improve the energy efficiency of the building.
The existing gas fired heating boiler for St John sub Castro was nearly 30 years old, and although it had given good service over many years, it was relatively inefficient by modern standards, was noisy (as the residents of Church Row will confirm!) and was increasingly unreliable in very cold weather – just when it was needed!
It was therefore replaced by a pair of 60Kw Atag condensing units, operating at well over 90% efficiency.
with all the sophisticated controls available to a modern heating system.
The noise level was much reduced, and the unsightly ventilation stack was no longer required.
Over the coming months we will be monitoring heating energy consumption, so that we can quantify the benefits of the higher efficiency boilers which, together with the new thermal insulation to the Nave ceiling, should provide significant savings in our running costs.
