Introduction

Stuart Billington

This website is about the history of St John sub Castro Church and the Parish it has served over the years – indeed over the centuries.

You may be interested to see the extent of the Parish in the map below. This excludes the wider parish of St John Without, which can be seen by clicking the link.
Parish boundaries have less significance now than they used to have – anyone can go to any church these days.

St John’s Church is marked in red towards the bottom right.

In order to find your way around the various parts of this website, it is simplest to click on ‘people’ or ‘places’ or ‘education resources’ in the top menu bar.

If you don’t know much about St John’s, click this link to start with an overview of the St John’s story.

The success of this website will be very dependent on contributions to it from members of the community – perhaps from people like you . . .

If you have memories of your own, or memories of people who have been connected with the church or have simply lived in the Parish, do tell us about them by using our Contribution form. Photos are welcome, as are any items of historical or social interest.

Another way you can contribute is to use the Comment facility. Each post (this is the name given to each individual web page) provides an ‘Add a comment’ link at the bottom of each page to enable this. We invite you to use it!

A small team of volunteers has created this site as part of a Heritage Lottery funded project, and we have been gradually adding content over the last couple of years or so. However this is very much work in progress, and there is a great deal more interesting material available for adding to the site – not to mention items of interest waiting to be discovered.

We would like to find more helpers for our team – so if you are interested please contact us.

You might find it helpful to have an overview of how the site is structured.
This will also provide you with an alternative way of navigating around the website by clicking on a selected Category.

  • I have privately printed book (copy number 7 of 20) of the letters of Arnold Ewart Howe to and from his family during the first world war. There are also photographs of his grave taken shortly after the war i suspect. It is a very personal diary and i am keen to give it to any surviving relatives of the Howe family. Might you be able to help in this regard? Thank you.

  • Thank you for your comment Graham – how interesting. This could be very challenging for me though! I have one or two possible avenues to pursue, and if I get anywhere I will let you know. Have you tried tracing them through the Ancestry website?
    Best wishes,
